Hedge & topiary work
A good hedge is one of the hardest things in a garden to get right and one of the easiest to ruin. We shape and maintain them by hand, with sharp, clean tools, and the patience the job actually deserves.

What it is
Hedge work is anything from a single annual trim of a suburban griselinia to ongoing maintenance of formal totara avenues, clipped buxus parterres and topiary. We use battery shears for fine work, hand-held petrol cutters only where the scale demands, and string lines on every formal hedge so the lines actually read straight. Where a hedge has been let go, we plan a two- or three-stage restoration rather than butchering it back in one visit.
When you'd need it
A formal hedge needs its annual or twice-yearly trim to hold its shape
An overgrown hedge needs careful restoration back to a workable size
A new boundary screen needs shaping in its early years to set the lines for life
Topiary, parterres or specimen pieces need experienced hands and a steady eye

Recent example

Formal totara avenue, Herne Bay
A 40-metre run of clipped totara along a heritage driveway needed restoring after two years without attention. Over two visits a fortnight apart, we brought the lines back true, lifted the base by 200mm to clear the gravel, and set up an annual maintenance schedule. The owner now sees us twice a year and the avenue holds its shape between visits.
