Mature trees in Glendowie, Auckland

Service area · Eastern Bays

Glendowie.

Larger sections, mature trees, and the slope-side work that needs proper rigging.

Introduction

Glendowie has more land per property than most of the Eastern Bays, and the trees that grow on it have had room to get big. Pines, eucalyptus, large pohutukawa, and the occasional macrocarpa hedge boundary that's now 12 metres tall. A lot of the properties also sit on slopes — Riddell Road, West Tamaki Heights, and the streets stepping down to the harbour — which means the work usually involves proper rigging rather than straight-up felling. We're regulars in Glendowie for large tree removals, slope-aware crown reductions, and arborist reports for renovations on sloping sites where tree-protection planning matters as much as the building work.

01

Large tree removal on sloping sites

Glendowie's slopes mean most large tree removals need lowering systems and rigging rather than directional felling. We plan the dismantle the day before, set anchors thoughtfully, and use mechanical advantage where the slope makes pure muscle a poor option.

02

Macrocarpa and conifer hedge boundaries

Many Glendowie properties have decades-old macrocarpa or conifer boundaries that have outgrown their original purpose. Reduction is possible but limited — these species don't bud back from old wood — so the conversation usually becomes whether to manage as-is or replace with a more appropriate hedge species.

03

Renovation arborist reports on slope sites

Sloping sites complicate construction tree-protection. We write reports that address the specific challenges of building on slopes near mature trees: machinery access, soil compaction risk, root-zone preservation across uneven ground.

Large pine removal on slope, Riddell Road

A 28-metre Pinus radiata leaning toward a renovated home on a steep slope. Standard felling impossible. We rigged from the top down across two days, lowered each section into a controlled drop zone on the lower terrace, and processed everything off-site. Property suffered no damage; the slope's existing plantings were untouched; the homeowner had been quoted twice the price by competitors who couldn't figure out the rigging plan.

FAQ

Questions from Glendowie clients.

Slope removals usually require dismantle from the top down with rigging, rather than directional felling, because the controlled drop zone is smaller and the consequences of getting it wrong are larger. Cost is typically 30–60% higher than the equivalent flat-section job. We'll explain the rigging plan in the quote so you understand what you're paying for.

Partially. Macrocarpa, leyland cypress, and most conifers don't bud back from old wood, which means heavy reduction leaves bare patches that won't fill in. We can reduce by 20–30% with reasonable results, but a hedge that's 12 metres tall and overgrown usually needs a longer conversation about whether to remove and replant with a species that takes maintenance better.

A site visit, identification of trees that fall within or adjacent to the building zone, an assessment of which need protection (and how) versus which can or should be removed, and a written report meeting council's requirements. Slope sites need particular attention to root-zone preservation across uneven ground and machinery access without compaction. Most reports take 3–5 working days from site visit to delivered document.

Drop zones and lowering systems. We set ropes and pulleys to direct every lowered section into a planned landing area on a hard surface — usually a driveway or a section of lawn we've matted. Plants outside the drop zone are protected with garden boards. The crew briefs the plan before any cuts; nothing comes down without somewhere safe to land.
