Mature trees in Bombay, Auckland

Bombay.

Rural acreage, large eucalyptus, and the clearing work that pays for itself in mulch.

Introduction

Bombay is bigger country than the rest of south Auckland — proper rural acreage, longer driveways, and the kind of trees that don't fit on a quarter-acre section anywhere. Big eucalyptus, mature pines, leyland cypress shelterbelts that have grown to genuine forest scale. The work in Bombay is volume work: large-scale clearing, shelterbelt removal where the trees have outgrown their purpose, fire-risk reduction before summer, and the occasional commercial tree assessment for rural insurance work. We bring machinery sized for the scale, run multi-day jobs as a matter of routine, and we know the access and weather constraints that come with rural Bombay work.

Common tree work in Bombay.

01

Heavy clearing volume and machinery selection

Bombay jobs are usually sized in days, not hours. We bring machinery sized for the scale: bigger chippers, tracked equipment for soft ground, multiple trucks running in rotation. The selection matters — wrong machinery on the wrong job costs you money and gets stuck in mud.

02

Fire risk reduction before summer

Rural Bombay properties have real fire-risk exposure in summer, and many clearing jobs we do here are about reducing that risk: removing dead or declining trees near buildings, thinning out fire-loaded shelterbelts, and clearing accumulated brash. The work pays back the first dry season.

03

Mulch volume and on-site processing

Big rural jobs produce serious mulch volume — sometimes more than the property has practical use for. We can process to mulch on-site (for use on the property), process and remove (for off-site disposal), or stockpile for slow distribution. Each option has different cost and we discuss it in the quote.

2-acre eucalyptus clearing, Mill Road

A rural property with a 2-acre block of mature eucalyptus reaching end-of-life — fire risk concerns and dropping limbs near a paddock fence. We cleared the block over six days using tracked machinery and on-site mulching, returned mulch to the property's orchard areas (about 40 cubic metres), and ground the stumps. Replacement planting recommended but managed by the owner. Fire risk meaningfully reduced; mulch still in use three years later.

FAQ

Questions from Bombay clients.

Highly variable — depends on tree size, density, access, ground conditions, what you want done with the mulch, and stump grinding. For a 1-acre clearing job in Bombay with reasonable access and mulch returned to property, expect roughly NZD 15,000–35,000. Larger jobs scale roughly proportionally. We give a fixed-price written quote after a site visit and we don't surprise you on the invoice.

Yes — fire-risk reduction is a regular reason we get called in Bombay and the wider rural south Auckland. We assess the property, identify the highest-risk trees and accumulated material, and prioritise the work that reduces risk most for the budget available. Pre-summer scheduling means we book that work between May and September; ask early in the season to secure dates.

Depends on the property. Orchard floors love deep mulch, garden beds use it slowly, paddock edges and shelterbelt understories take it well. We can distribute as we go (faster, lower cost) or stockpile in a designated area for the owner to spread over time. We'll talk it through in the quote.

Yes, regularly. We bring tracked equipment for soft ground, set up turnarounds where needed, and avoid running heavy trucks repeatedly across paddocks where it would cause damage. Long driveways with bridges, gates, or low overhead clearance need to be discussed up front so we bring the right gear.
